Tennessee Head Start

Head Start and Pre-K for Bradley County and Cleveland City Schools

Head Start offers a comprehensive, early childhood education experience to families in the four counties of Southeast Tennessee. These counties include: Bradley, Polk, McMinn and Meigs.

Head Start is a jump ahead – a beginning to school and to life outside a child’s home environment!

It began, nationally, as a part of the federal government’s plan to fight poverty. The fundamental belief was that disadvantaged children and their families can overcome adversity by participating in an early childhood program.

The program focuses on the intellectual, physical, nutritional, disabilities and socialization needs of the child. It also strives to provide assistance to the entire family by encouraging family involvement in all areas of Head Start. This parental component of the program is seen as the long term key to success.

Head Start seeks to give children a variety of experiences in a setting that is developmentally appropriate for their age and readiness levels, while at the same time offering parents the skills to become better providers and role models.

Since 2005 both Bradley County and Cleveland City Schools have partnered with Head Start to operate their state funded Pre-K classes. These classes are run according to Head Start Performance Standards, and they include children from both programs.

Also, Head Start is in collaboration with McMinn County Schools and operates Pre-K/Head Start classes at Calhoun and Mt. View. There are also many additional exciting partnerships between Head Start and State Pre-K around that county and others.
